Day 1: Welcome to Cambodia! --by Cedric and Raul

The team is arriving in Phnom Penh today! After months of planning, our team has touched down in this busy, sweaty city. We are ten, including the two of us Expedition Leaders, Cedric and Raul. Some of us left from the U.S., others from Portugal, Turkey and Vietnam. Our backgrounds and experiences are as varied as any ten persons could ever have. We come together in Cambodia to study the Khmer Rouge and its impact on the country today. We are in the field stepping from behind media headlines to uncover the faces, names and places that tell the real story of this country.

We are not tourists. We are here on a public mission. There is a story about Cambodia that has been told, but not nearly enough. We are not the first to cover the Khmer Rouge nor will we be the last. The UBELONG platform we have to lend our voice reaches thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people. But there are platforms many, many times bigger than ours- and that is the point. We have a voice and that is all that matters. If the history of Cambodia can teach us anything, it is that with our voice comes the responsibility to speak up.
